Boston Globe
to Replace Publisher
The Boston
Globe announced yesterday that Richard Gilman, who assumed the role
of publisher in 1999, is stepping down. The announcement is not a
big surprise to many who have watched Globe readership plummet in
the last few years, and the staff suffer several significant layoffs.
According to the Boston
Herald, the Globe has been the most underperforming paper in the New
York Times Co. group, which consists of 14 major papers, and has pulled
down the average earnings of the conglomerate.
He will be succeeded by
P. Steven Ainsley, the president and chief operating officer of the
New York Times regional group in Florida. Mary Jacobus, the president
and general manager of The Globe, will move to Florida to take Mr.
Ainsley's position. The changes are to take place Tuesday. Mr. Gilman
will serve as an adviser until the end of the year.
