.Democrats Restore $150 Million of Pork to State Budget
At
a bewildering pace, the legislature kept up a steady stream of overrides
to Gov. Mitt Romney’s vetoes yesterday. So far, over $150 million of discretionary
spending that Romney designated as “pork” has been restored to the
budget.
In
the House, even the small opposition from the Republicans evaporated
in many cases, with many overrides passing unanimously, because most
saw the futility of fighting the overwhelming Democrat majority. Many others were overridden with only a handful
of Republicans voting against them.
The most heated moment came when the legislature was voting on the
allocation for a new, independent Commission on Gay Youth that is
to have an operating budget of at least $1.5 million.
Rep. Travis (D-Rehoboth), citing the fact that there was already
such a commission under the oversight of the Governor’s office, sought
to have the veto sustained. This
drew a blistering attack from at least one member of the house.
