| Church Leaders Want Senator Schumer’s Apology for His
“Bigoted Comments” that Were “Offensive and Dangerous” |
Leaders Appeal
for “Civil” and “Non-Violent Debate”
The executive
committee of the National Clergy Council has called on Senator
Charles Schumer to immediately apologize for his “bigoted comments”
that were made Tuesday on the floor of the U.S. Senate.
Schumer lashed
out at Christians who object to the destruction of human embryos.
He described them as “theocrats” who “want their faith to dictate
what the government does.”
The Senator then said that this is why the founders of
the country “put down their plows and took up muskets to fight.”
In response the
Clergy Council president, Rev. Rob Schenck, said: “Senator
Charles Schumer’s remarks were not just insulting to tens of millions
of Americans of traditional Christian faith, but his words were
downright menacing. For a U.S. Senator to vilify a whole segment
of the American population based on their religious convictions
and then suggest fighting them with guns is frightening.”
He appealed to
the Senator to “engage in civil and non-violent debate on these
matters.” Schumer
was also the only U.S. Senator to refuse an Easter/Passover Gift
package from the National Clergy Council’s affiliate group, Faith
and Action, that was hand-delivered to all congressional offices
earlier this year.
The Senator sent back the package of two books and a personal
letter from Rev. Schenck and included his own letter noting that
he was not accepting the gift. In contrast, numerous Senators
sent personal notes of appreciation to Faith and Action.
The Council represents church leaders from Catholic, Evangelical,
Orthodox and Protestant traditions.
Schumer Has Demonstrated
Extreme Hostility Before
In June, Schumer sat quietly while
the Comptroller of the state of New York told a group of graduating
seniors at Queens College that Schumer would “put a bullet between
the president’s eyes if he could get away with it.” The Comptroller, Alan Hevesi, intended it as a compliment to Schumer who had just
addressed the families and members of the graduating class and
was listening to Hevesi. |
There was never any apology given to the President except
at a Press Conference that afternoon where Hevesi apologized to
all. Schumer never apologized to anyone or expressed any regret
for staying silent at the Commencement. He never apologized to
the President.
It was just another example of the reason why
this man does not have the temperament to be the leader of the
Democratic Party.
Schumer became Senator because he is a close personal friend
of the owner of the New York Times, Pinch Sulzberger, and does
his bidding. |
