Did We Make a Mistake on the NY Times Owner's Name?
I just received my Sept issue of Massachusetts News. I was disappointed
to see throughout that you misspell the name of the owner and, for many
years, publisher of the NYT. His nickname was Punch, not Pinch. You make
the error at least a half dozen times throughout the article. You also
confuse Punch with his son when you discuss his growing up in the 1960s.
Sincerely,
Paul Faler
EDITOR'S RESPONSE:
Punch Sulzberger is the father of Pinch Sulzberger. Punch was named Chairman
of "The New York Times Company" in 1963 and served until 1997
when he reluctantly appointed his son, Pinch. Punch was unable to read
the paper because of his dyslexia (which is endemic in the Sulzberger
family) but he was an astute businessman. His nepotism in favor of Pinch
disappointed the 12 cousins of Pinch who are watching closely for his
downfall. That almost occurred during the Jayson Blair scandal.
