Welcome, Bernie Goldberg, to You and to Your New Book,
“100 People Who Are Screwing Up America”
According to You, Bernie, The “Most Dangerous” Person
in America Is
Pinch Sulzberger, Chairman of the New York Times/Boston Globe

Bernie Goldberg, a CBS News reporter for nearly 30 years, is still a “liberal.”  He has now written three best-selling books criticizing the news media, for which he worked all his life.  His latest, “100 People Who Are Screwing Up America,” was just published and is already a best-seller.  Bernie’s first book, “Bias,” was at the top of the best-seller list in 2002. His second, “Arrogance,” was published only a year later in 2003.
In all three, he is advising liberals that they must have “fair and balanced” programs at the TV networks.  So why shouldn’t conservatives welcome Goldberg with open arms?
        They should !
        We do ! !
        Welcome, Bernie Goldberg ! ! !
BUT Bernie is also saying he is now a “conservative.”  In our opinion, that is not accurate.  Bernie must make it clear to himself and to others that he has been a New York City liberal all his life and still is ---  there’s nothing wrong with that.   He’s fair to those who disagree and does not demonize them as the Sulzbergers do at the New York Times.  It’s obvious that MassNews was the source for much of his newest book.  We are compelled as a friend, therefore, to point out some of the problems he’s had as he has worked to fully grasp this material we have written over the years.

      Bernie’s Three Books Are Bestsellers
Bernie’s first book, “Bias” (#1 on the New York Times list in 2002) concerned itself with unfairness by television newsmen.  His second book, “Arrogance,” was published just a year later in 2003.  Both books shot immediately to the No. 1 spots, as has the new book.
But the 2005 volume is different.  It’s clearly inspired by MassNews.  We’ve been targeting the “most dangerous people in the nation” for years.  One of our roles has been to blaze a path through a wilderness and make it “okay” for Bernie and other moderate liberals to examine and criticize many heroes of the American Left.  It’s good to see our Internet newspaper being used for that purpose.

New York City and Massachusetts Are Both “Different”
Only in Massachusetts and New York City, where the New York Times is in control, is hatred seen.  Most of us live in areas where liberals and conservatives respect each other’s opinions.  We disagree passionately on the issues, but we do have respect for one another.
The following page is a portion of Bernie’s new book (page 296) which tells how he feels about this.
“The New York Times is a far cry from what it once was --- and will surely remain so as long as Pinch Sulzberger is in place.  Because while editors will come and go, he is the constant --- the Times version of a permanent government --- and he remains unapologetically dedicated to using the paper’s influence to impose his notion of the way America ought to be --- on all the rest of us.”
Bernie then tells what he calls a “famous story” about Pinch.  He says it should be repeated “often.”
“It seems that back in the 60s, when young Pinch was such a committed student activist against the war in Vietnam that he was twice arrested in antiwar protests, his exasperated father, then-Times publisher, Arthur Sulzberger Sr., asked him a simple question: ‘If a young American soldier comes upon a young Vietnamese soldier, which one do you want to see get shot?’
“Pinch didn’t even hesitate. It was, he said, ‘the dumbest question I ever heard in my life,’ adding ‘I would want to see the American get shot.  It’s the other guy’s country.’
“As the man in charge of the nation’s most powerful and influential newspaper --- the one from which almost all the major news outlets, including the networks, slavishly take their cues --- he has probably done more than anyone to destroy the confidence of millions of ordinary Americans in the fairness and basic integrity of the so-called mainstream media.”

Bernie Will Always Be a New York City Liberal
The portion of Bernie’s book quoted above is where a reader will begin to understand that Bernie will always be a New York City liberal.    It is his heritage.  There is nothing wrong with that as long as he permits everyone else to also express his beliefs, unlike what the Sulzberger family does.
Bernie wrote the following misleading statement in this section of his new book: “The Times has always been a liberal newspaper.”
The truth is:   Before the founder of the New York Times died in 1935, the newspaper had already been seized by Arthur Hays Sulzberger, a handsome bachelor who gained complete control of the privately owned company by simply marrying the only child of Mr. Ochs.  As a result, Mr. Ochs suffered a series of nervous breakdowns.   He wished to leave the newspaper in his Will to his nephew, a conservative like himself, but his daughter thwarted her loving father, who died of a broken heart and without a plan.  (A radical/liberal feminist, the daughter suffered from dyslexia, was usually ignored by her family and was taught by “progressive” or “radical” professors at nearby Columbia University.)
Upon gaining control in 1933 when Mr. Ochs stopped coming to the office, Sulzberger immediately changed the direction of the Times and used its powerful voice to join those individuals who were independently supporting the Russian dictator, Joseph Stalin, who was starving five million or more independent Ukrainian farmers who were resisting Communist plans to collectivize the farmers in this “bread-basket” of Russia.
Sulzberger instructed his reporter in Russia, Walter Duranty, to add the powerful voice of the Times to the individuals who were trying to protect and support Stalin, such as the famous English playwright George Bernard Shaw and the black American singer, Paul Robeson.
What we’re witnessing today is a disastrous fight within the Sulzberger family.  Pinch is battling all his ancestors, including his father.  Pinch says they were all homophobes.  He is not inaccurate in that statement.  Pinch’s grandmother was the mother of Pinch’s father, Punch Sulzberger, who could not read the paper because of his dyslexia but was Chairman for 34 years.  She was so extreme in her dislike of homosexuals that she prevented the Times from providing any dialogue or leadership when psychiatrists, artists, etc. began to change their views.
Meanwhile, Pinch is apparently not overtly homosexual (with a wife and children), but he revels in discussing homosexuality with many friends who dress in women’s clothes.  This has been explained fully by us many times and can be found in our free Archives or in Atty. Pawlick’s book, “Libel by New York Times.”
Whatever your feelings about homosexuality, we have been drawn into a battle within the Sulzberger family between Pinch, its Chairman since 1997, and the rest of the clan.  When one owns the multi-billion dollar conglomerate known as The New York Times Company and the Chairman is seeking to “get even” with his father and others, it has poisonous consequences for our nation.   This is documented in the many histories of the New York Times, particularly "The Trust."
Bernie Goldberg is a great salesman, not a great writer.  We believe that Bernie hires excellent people to write under his guidance and direction.  He was an attractive television star for 30 years, not an activist writer.  America needs a great salesman to alert the nation to the dangers of having so much power in The New York Times Company.   Bernie is doing that admirably and we must offer him our help.

Bernie Says “Most Dangerous Person” in America Is Pinch
The “most dangerous person” in America, according to Bernie’s new book, is the owner of the New York Times, Pinch Sulzberger.  Let’s think about that.
When Atty. Pawlick first challenged the Times/Boston Globe conglomerate back in 1999 and then intensified his challenges in 2001 after the Times/Globe libeled Pawlick’s wife 16 times, Pawlick had never heard of Pinch Sulzberger nor had most Americans.  He didn’t know that this newspaper was owned and controlled by a few members of one family.
But now at the nationwide Fox News channel, there is a constant drumbeat to expose the New York Times. You don’t hear much about Pinch yet.  But you will as Pawlick’s promotion of his book,
“Libel by New York Times” continues to build across the nation.
Even fewer had heard of Publisher/Attorney Pawlick in 1999. But the lawyers in his home state of Massachusetts have always revered his newspaper, Lawyers Weekly, which Pawlick founded in 1972 in his rented home in Weston where he lived with his four children (and no nannies). What a contrast with the inherited wealth of the Sulzbergers.  Despite this contrast, Pawlick had the courage after 25 years of being a Publisher/Attorney to challenge the largest, most-famous paper in the world!  By that time, Lawyers Weekly had 40 lawyers, 20 writers, 40 in sales and 20 others working in seven states, as the acknowledged leader for newspapers for lawyers.

SJC Chief Justice Margaret Marshall Is Also in the Top of Bernie’s List; Was Personally Warned by Pawlick in 2003 in Front of Entire Court
It would be impossible for anyone to write about Judge Marshall, as Bernie has, without using Atty. Pawlick as a source. Every aspect of Judge Marshall’s immoral, unethical and illegal conduct has been revealed by Pawlick. He personally warned Judge Marshall in May 2003, with the entire Court watching, that if she went ahead and broke the law, she would regret it.
“There is going to be a seismic revolution that will forever have a tremendous effect upon the politics of this state,” Atty. Pawlick warned her, face-to-face, in 2003.
He suggested that Marshall consider the fate of the Democratic candidates for Governor in 2002, both of whom had lost the Governor’s race to Republican Mitt Romney because both were on record as favoring homosexual rights.
“I will ask you,” Pawlick challenged Justice Marshall, “to consider that Senator Birmingham and Shannon O'Brien both went down to defeat because they opposed the Protection of Marriage Amendment and I would hate to see this Court get a stain on its face by doing the same -- making the same mistake.  So I would ask you to consider that, and you and we both want what the people want. But we don't know what the people want [because they have not been allowed to vote as required by the state Constitution]. “We just hope and pray that you consider this very carefully and the Goodridge case [where the Court did impose homosexual marriage in November 2003], before forcing us, all of us, into Federal Court. Thank you for your time.”
A vote in the Massachusetts legislature will occur in 2005 to terminate Judge Marshall and the three judges who voted with her and made it a 4-3 decision. Only a simple majority is needed to fire the judges.

Bernard Goldberg Is Struggling; What Does He Believe?
Like everyone else, Bernie has trouble articulating what he believes as he uncovers more and more about the Sulzbergers and as he struggles with his possible new identity as a former New York City liberal.  However, if one looks only at Bernie’s excellent choice of Pinch Sulzberger and Margaret Marshall as two of the most dangerous people in America, it is evident he would not have been able to choose them unless we made it possible.  The following is Bernie’s complete list (in order) of the most dangerous:
Michael Moore;  Arthur (Pinch) Sulzberger;  Senator Edward Kennedy;   Jesse Jackson;  ACLU;    President  Jimmy Carter;  Judge Margaret Marshall;  Columnist at New York Times Paul Krugman;   Education columnist Jonathan Kozol;  People for the American Way President Ralph Neas.
The people Bernie has in his list used to be “untouchable” apostles of hate and anger.  They’re no longer untouchable. They can be praised or criticized just like everyone else.
These haters are mostly radical feminists from NOW, not male homosexuals.  When they were still flush from their “victory” on July 17, 2002 (where the Democratic legislature violated the state Constitution and refused to vote on our Protection of Marriage Amendment, thus illegally but effectively, killing it), the homosexual newspaper in Boston published a congratulatory editorial.  They agreed that the main proponents of homosexual “marriage,” are not male homosexuals but radical feminists and their allies, who dislike men. Their agenda is to destroy traditional marriage in any way they can because they believe it hurts all women.
The homosexual newspaper confirmed that it was the AFL-CIO, ACLU, Anti-Defamation League, NOW and other liberals who were behind the illegal adjournment of the vote on the Protection of Marriage Amendment on July 17.  It indicated that most homosexuals were not interested in the subject. It was like pulling teeth to get them to contribute to the effort, one activist reported.
This confirms what we have been saying.  This is not about homosexuality. It's about a powerful, liberal agenda to change our morality. They seek a socialist state similar to Sweden or Cuba, with a free-love society in which children are the responsibility of the state, not their parents. That's why the national, liberal organizations are so interested in what is happening in Massachusetts. They’re hiding behind homosexuals and others to achieve their political objectives. They wish to diminish the institution of marriage which has been the bedrock of our country since its founding.
Bernie, himself, is uncertain whether he is “liberal,” a “former liberal” or a “conservative.” Whatever he decides, we welcome him.
Atty. Pawlick still bristles when called a hater by Pinch Sulzberger and others.  He had homosexual friends at Williams College and excellent homosexual employees at Lawyers Weekly.  In addition, his four children all have the Jewish blood of their beloved grandfather in their veins.  Also, Atty. Pawlick has three “black” grandchildren because he always taught his children that the color of a person’s skin was immaterial in life.   Pawlick challenges anyone to show a more tolerant face than his.  However, he does differentiate between his homosexual friends and his family.  He believes that his homosexual friends are making a foolish mistake that is damaging their lives and those of many around them.
He also realizes that we all make serious mistakes constantly in our lives. That includes Pinch Sulzberger, who had a terrible childhood with irreparable damage.  Pinch isn’t really sure whether Punch Sulzberger is his father.
Pawlick also bristled in 1999 when Sulzberger and the Boston Globe responded to his initial attempt to begin an “Intelligent Discussion” about what is taught to teenagers about homosexuality in the schools.  Its answer was a prominent headline about hate: “Gays Say [name of local town] Lawyer Sent ‘Hate Mail.’” In other words, Pawlick was a “wild” person who sent “hate mail” around the state. There would be no discussion permitted at all.  Pawlick had been an elected member of a 10,000 pupil, autonomous school board in Pennsylvania Dutch country and Chairman of its Teachers Committee. He is qualified.

Bernie Has a Large Task;  Must Correct Inaccurate Statements
It is very difficult for anyone to “wrap their arms” around the history of the Boston Globe, and Bernie has undertaken a Herculean task.  This is true because the Sulzberger family has been very careful to work quietly behind the scenes.   Bernie has done well as he struggles to break through this wall of secrecy.  We highly recommend the 870-page history of the Times, “The Trust,” or “Libel by New York Times.”
The following are a few of Bernie’s troubling statements.  Our full comments are on our website.

  “I’m pro-abortion with reservations.”

“Well, I’m not like some right-wing guy who’s way out there.”

“I don’t know anyone more Libertarian than me on gay rights.”

“I don’t want my conservative friends to call in the firing squad [because] I really like Bill Clinton.”

                                   Startling, But Easily Verified
This material is startling but easily verified.  Much more information is quickly available in our FREE archives.  Info about Bernard Goldberg is in his best-selling books.  Info about Pinch Sulzberger and the New York Times is in “The Trust,” an 870-page book commissioned by the Times and written by the reporter who covered the press for them for nine years, winning a Pulitzer Prize.  The desperation of Pinch is seen in the vicious, lead article on the front page of the Business section of the Boston Globe on April 11, 2004, telling every lawyer in the state not to buy Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly, the newspaper owned by the attorney/daughter of J. Edward Pawlick, founder of this newspaper.  The lawyers of the state ignored the Globe article which was excellent free advertising for Pawlick’s new book, “Libel by New York Times,” recommended by the Heritage Foundation and Alan Keyes.   The Globe article is easily obtainable for a dollar or two on their website by searching for “Pawlick.”

Our Response to Bernie Goldberg’s Troubling Statements
In our mailing of 100,000 letter-size copies of Massachusetts News, we did not have room to print our responses to some of Bernie’s troubling statements and promised to do so on our Internet site.  We are doing so here.
It’s very difficult for anyone to “wrap one’s arms” around the history of the New York Times/Boston Globe.  Bernie has undertaken a Herculean task inasmuch as the Sulzberger family has been very careful to work quietly behind the scenes.   Bernie has done well as he struggles to break through this wall of secrecy.  We highly recommend the 870-page history of the Times, “The Trust,” or “Libel by New York Times.”

● “I’m pro-abortion with reservations.”
Being “pro-abortion with reservations” is a lot like being “a little pregnant.” Either a person is pregnant or not.  Either a person is “pro-abortion” or not.

● “I don’t know anyone more Libertarian than me on gay rights.”

A Capital “L” Libertarian is someone who belongs to the specific, political party, known as the Libertarian Party. Other people, are “small L” libertarians. They do not belong to the “Libertarian Party.” Their belief is that the best government in any state is as small as possible and not intrusive in the lives of its citizens.
For some reason, the Capital “L” Party in Massachusetts has come to be one of the most liberal parties in the state. They are so strident on homosexual marriage that their feminist and homosexual allies have warned them to be quiet because they were hurting the cause.

● “Jayson Blair is a fluke.”
Jayson Blair is not a “fluke” but just another person who was abused by Pinch Sulzberger.   Pinch “adopted” Jayson when he was 26-years-old or less. Jayson has always served Pinch’s need of having a black, almost like a pet, who would be brought forth to show how good and kind Pinch is. But Jayson apparently became very curious as to what a “pet” could do at a powerful place like the New York Times. Could he even make up fictitious stories?  It became obvious he could do so, until a reporter at a small paper in another city complained that the Times was stealing his material. That was when the walls began to cave on Pinch and he had to blame everything on the two top editors at the Times (his close friends) and Jayson, without taking any responsibility himself.   Even after Jayson no longer served any obvious purpose to Pinch, Atty. awlick was guaranteeing (as a former trial lawyer) that Jayson was being given lots of “termination” money to be quiet when he was fired, lots more money than if he, a poor person, had tried to fight Sulzberger.   Blair was just another poor person who was trapped and being “used” by Pinch.
Bernie was correct when he placed Pinch at the top of the public enemy list but Pinch fooled almost everyone, even Bernie, on this one.   Most people blame it all on Blair,   Ed Pawlick discusses this fully in his book, “Libel by New York Times.”
(All of the stories on our free Internet site are much more interesting than these sound-bites you are reading now.)

● “I like Bill Clinton.”
When Bernie gave an exclusive interview to Newsweek’s web-edition on July 20, 2005, he said the following.
Newsweek: “But a lot of conservatives say the whole thing with Monica Lewinsky really coarsened our discourse. The scandal was sordid and tawdry, and he was responsible for that.”
Bernie: Yeah, it would have been fine with me if all of that stayed private. I don’t know, it’s funny to say, but I didn’t agree with Bill Clinton’s politics, but you know I like Bill Clinton a lot more than I like Al Gore and Howard Dean.
       Newsweek: “Why is that?”
Bernie: I come from a tenement in the South Bronx. He comes from rural poor Arkansas. In one sense, we couldn’t be any more different. I don’t want my conservative friends to call in the firing squad, but in a social way, he seems like the kind of guy I’d like to go to a ballgame with.
We at MassNews understand that most people are totally charmed when they see President Clinton in person, but Bernie foolishly allowed himself to sound like just another liberal when questioned by this important magazine this summer.
But much more important.  Who are Bernie’s friends who he thinks would “call in the firing squad?’

● “I’d Make Racial Discrimination a Criminal Offense!”
A criminal offense !?!  Holy Cow, you have to be kidding. Our MassNews founder, Attorney Ed Pawlick, wrote one of his first books, “Freedom Will Conquer Racism,” to tell how the Civil Rights Act of 1954 was destroying the black community and how Jimmy Carter finished the job in the 1970s and sent American businesses flying away overseas to avoid the punishment that all American businesses were receiving in the U.S.
Now the liberals are saying it’s President Bush’s fault that we don’t have any industry remaining and that the blacks have such low employment and so many black males are in jail.
As a competent lawyer, Ed has watched in dismay as his fears have come true. We have lost our industry and the black community has lost its soul. Make it a criminal offense??? What possible good could that do?

● “Well, I’m not like some right-wing guy who’s way out there.”
We’re puzzled about the “right-wing” guy.  The term “right-wing” sounds like a terrible person.
Who is “this guy”?

● “Bernie is one of the most original writers in broadcast journalism.”
None other than Bernie himself wrote or approved this copy. It appears on his own personal site at www.bernardgoldberg.com. The entire quotation is: “Bernard Goldberg, the television news reporter and author of ‘Bias’, a New York Times number one bestseller about how the media distort the news, is widely seen as one of the most original writers and thinkers in broadcast journalism.”  We happen to believe that Bernie is one of the most original in broadcast journalism.  We hope we are correct.

● Bernie Has Hinted that His Real Goal Is to Work for One of the Networks
Bernie has hinted that his real goal is to work for one of the three television networks. His exact words were: “Wouldn’t it be a brilliant move if one of the three networks said – and I want to make it clear that I’m not looking for a job – but if one of the three networks said, ‘let’s have him on as our media analyst,’ wouldn’t that be just fantastic television?”
Our response is that it would be “fantastic television” and he should start looking for that job.  With our tens-of-thousands of readers across the entire nation, we should be able to help.

● Bernie Is Welcomed Enthusiastically by Conservative Websites
Many good conservative websites welcome Bernie with great enthusiasm. For example, one such website which interviewed him for his newest book this summer (while driving around Washington for “more than 15 minutes”) wrote that Goldberg “inspired” the editor.  There’s no doubt that Bernie is a great salesman.
