Notebook: February 2003 Print Edition I Told You So! I told you so! Social policy is driving Mass. politics! There's nothing worse than a know-it-all who keeps saying, "I told you so." But what else can I do when it's crystal clear that I am right on target.
But I haven't gotten above the deck. My time has been spent in the boiler room working on the engines and the bottom. Does anyone believe I want to spend my time below deck? During World War II, those sailors in the boiler room had a red stripe on their shoulder while those above deck had a white stripe. I want to wear a white stripe again. But there are few volunteers for the red stripes. I'm tired of learning about, and writing about, men who want to play with the sexual organs of other men. I'm tired of women who want to play with the sexual organs of other women. I've always known that there are such people, but the problems of this 3% were never shoved in my face before or more important, in the faces of my grandchildren and other innocent lives. I don't want my grandchildren being taught in school to play sex with anyone, much less boys playing with other boys. There are so many wonderful things to do in this world that God gave to us. No one wants to spend their time below deck. But our boat is not going to get very far if it is not seaworthy. The last election in Massachusetts was all about social issues, but few of our "leaders" appear to understand. Tom Birmingham knows, because he took the brunt of the storm. He had his acceptance speech all ready, but he got pushed overboard by the aroused passengers who did not want a leader breaking all the rules of the sea and not repairing the boat. He said many times that the passengers pushed him overboard, but our leaders spend all their time on the quarterdeck so they don't know about that. In the early summer, he reported that he was getting more messages about marriage than about the budget and it was he who said that what was happening to him was because of his breaking the rules. Regardless, Shannon was also pushed overboard because of gay marriage and abortion. But until the boat's newspaper, the Globe, says so, many will not believe it to be true. They have a long wait ahead. We helped excite the passengers with our November issue which went to 250,000 citizens around the state - half the distribution of the boat's Globe. We got everything we asked for from the SJC but few on the boat realize it because the Globe has told everyone that we lost our lawsuit. Even our friends in the Legislature believed we lost until we pointed out that this was just more Globe propaganda. So, as we expand MassNews into other areas and finally get a white stripe around our uniform, please don't forget the red stripers also. Without those unsung heroes, we will all be like those on the Titanic. (My main concern at this point is that no one sends me to work in the galley for calling our vessel a "boat" instead of a "ship.") |
