Thousands of constituents of Sen. Harriette Chandler (D-Worcester) received letters last week informing them that she had voted to deny all the citizens of the Commonwealth their Constitutional right to vote on the Protection of Marriage Amendment.

In so doing, she violated her oath to obey the Massachusetts Constitution.

Not only did Chandler do all that, she also lied about the Amendment, says Mass. Citizens for Marriage, which mailed the thousands of letters.

"It may sound harsh, but there is no other way to describe her illegal conduct," said Sarah McVay Pawlick, President of MCM. "It does not please me to describe a fellow Wellesley College alum in that manner, but I am forced to do so.

"We had thousands of volunteers work thousands of hours to obtain the 130,000 signatures a year ago. We obeyed all the laws and worked hard. What right does she have to throw our beliefs and our efforts in the wastebasket? Are we not citizens? When were we disenfranchised?

"We mailed the letters to her constituents so they would encourage her to obey the law and tell the truth when the Amendment comes back to the Legislators for a vote later this fall. Is that too much to ask? Obey the law and tell the truth?"
